What are AMPs ?
Amps measure the flow of electricity as an electric current. You should think of electric current as the flow of water through a hosepipe. The more water flowing through the hosepipe, the stronger the current is.
What are WATTs ?
Watt is the basic unit of power in electrical systems. It can also be used in mechanical systems. It measures how much energy the system releases every second. In our battery diagram, the amount of voltage and current in the bulb determines how much energy is released.
How to calculate number of WATTS ?
All you need to know are two things. As mentioned in the previous calculations, you need to know the current of your circuit. You also need to know what voltage your outlet can handle. Then multiply the current by the number of volts. This is the maximum number of watts your circuit can support at one time. Exceeding this value may result in electric shock.
Simple WATT - AMP - VOLT Formula
Converting watts to amps can be done using the power formula, which states that I = P / E, where P is power measured in watts, I is current measured in amps, and E is voltage measured in volts.
Watts = Amps x Volts
Volt = Watts / Amps
Amps = Watts / Volts
Each of these quantities are measured using different units:
- Voltage is measured in volts (V)
- Current is measured in amps (A)
- Power is measured in watts (W)
For example, find the amperage of 1200 watts at 120 volts current = power / voltage current = 1200W / 120V current = 10A

Three-Phase AC Circuit Watts to Amps Conversion
Using Line to Line Voltage
For three-phase AC circuits where the line to line voltage is known, the formula to convert watts to amps is:
I(A) = P(W) / VL-L(V) × PF × √3
The current I in amps is equal to the power P in watts divided by the line to line voltage V in volts multiplied by the power factor PF multiplied by the square root of 3.
Using Line to Neutral Voltage
For three-phase AC circuits where the line to neutral voltage is known, the formula to convert watts to amps is:
I(A) = P(W) / VL-N(V) × PF × 3
The current I in amps is equal to the power P in watts divided by the voltage V in volts multiplied by the power factor PF multiplied by 3.
